Senator Tim Kaine visits the Warrior Retreat

August 31, 2017

Haymarket, Virginia:  Serve Our Willing Warriors (SOWW) was pleased to welcome Virginia Senator Tim Kaine (D) to the Warrior Retreat at Bull Run on Thursday, August 31.

Senator Kaine serves on the Armed Services Committee.  He visited the Retreat to meet with staff, volunteers, Warriors, and Veterans to discuss military issues and concerns.

SOWW’s Executive Director, Jeffrey Kendall Sapp, led Senator Kaine on a tour of the 11,000-square foot Retreat to show what it provides wounded, ill, injured, or recovering Warriors from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, during 6-day respite stays.

The Retreat hosts only one family at a time and Warriors incur no cost.

Issues discussed included how Veterans can assimilate back into civilian society, PTSD, the Veteran suicide rate, reducing red tape for Warrior participation in non-medical programs that help recuperation, and doing better at supporting caregivers.

Senator Kaine and his staff were impressed and moved by the Warrior’s input and stories.

Mr. Sapp extended an invitation for the Senator to keep the dialogue going by hosting a warrior-themed event at the Retreat in the future.

After vowing to do what he can to address topics discussed, Senator Kaine said: “The Armed Services Committee is grappling with a lot of issues.  You have answers to a lot of the issues we have.  We will take the challenge of doing a warrior-themed event.”
